PREVIEW: FFA Cup Round 3

Cardiff City (ZPL) v Barnsley United (ZPL)
Tuesday 10th April
Cardiff Oval No.2 @ 7pm

The first game of the week is between two clubs that lost their Round 1 matches so it's a little bit tough to gauge. Cardiff City were the cup specialists last season so they know a little bit about this competition and what it takes to progress whilst Barnsley are newly-promoted so with that in mind and home ground advantage, Cardiff may just edge if as the favourites.

My Tip: Cardiff City 2-1 Barnsley

Mayfield United (ZPL) v Thornton Redbacks (NL1)
Tuesday 10th April
Mayfield Park @ 7pm

Newysports will be on hand for this match. It promises to be a cracker as well as both teams have shown a lot of promise. Mayfield were superb in pre-season and won their first league game whilst Thornton have started the New-FM season unbeaten and just took down the defending premiers Cooks Hill this past weekend. It's going to be a very difficult game and as seen in past year's, ZPL sides always trouble the New-FM sides. Tough to call but Thornton may be the ones to win it.

My Tip: Mayfield United 1-3 Thornton Redbacks

Dudley-Redhead (ZPL) v West Wallsend (NL1)
Wednesday 11th April
Lydon Oval @ 7pm

Cup games are normally pretty tight affairs and with these two teams known for physicality and hard-hitting football, this could be a fairly intense game under lights at Lydon. The Thistles are more than capable of competing with teams from the NL1 whilst West Wallsend are coming off a big win over New Lambton. With home advantage, almost have to put Dudley down as the favourites. Very tough to call and may go all the way.

My Tip: Dudley-Redhead 1-1 West Wallsend (Westy win via PENS)

Wallsend F.C (NL1) v New Lambton F.C (NL1)
Wednesday 11th April
Wallsend Oval No.2 @ 7pm

Accidentally forgot this game due to the Northern draw graphic not showing it. Nonetheless it's an all-NL1 affair at Wallsend Oval with the home side coming off a very impressive start to the season and New Lambton in a small crisis after losing their first three matches. The Eagles will be hoping to pick up a big midweek cup win but safe to say they might meet their exit on Wednesday.

My Tip: Wallsend FC 3-1 New Lambton

====================================================

Swansea FC (ZPL) v Belmont-Swansea (NL1)
Wednesday 11th April
Chapman Oval @ 7pm

These two local rivals just cannot stop drawing each other in the FFA Cup. Three of the past four years has seen them meet and Belswans have struggled against the ZPL Swansea. Two clubs who share a very similar local philosophy and are only separate by some water and a bridge. FFA Cup derby football doesn't get much better and with Belswans still finding their top form, they may be given another cup exit by their local rivals.

My Tip: Swansea FC 2-1 Belmont-Swansea

====================================================

Singleton Strikers (NL1) v Charlestown JFC (ZL2)
Wednesday 11th April
Howe Park @ 7pm

This one looks a mismatch at Howe Park. Singleton is a very tough place to get a result at and especially in a midweek fixture. Add to that the Strikers are coming off a big win over Belswans and Charlestown conceded no less than 11 goals in their opening ZL2 fixture and it's safe to say Singleton should be fairly comfortable in winning this one. Will be interesting to see if they rotate players as depth isn't quiet strong.

My Tip: Singleton Strikers 5-0 Charlestown

====================================================

Warners Bay (ZPL) v South Cardiff (NL1)
Wednesday 11th April
John St. Oval @ 7pm

Another local derby of sorts with Warners Bay coming off a solid opening performance against the Newcastle Suns. South Cardiff's last fixture was a horror 3-0 home loss to Cessnock but after having the bye this past weekend, fitness will be firmly in their favour. A few questions are starting to be asked of Southy's defence and they can use this game to silence some doubters. Southy need this win.

My Tip: Warners Bay 0-3 South Cardiff

====================================================

Garden Suburb (ZL1) v Bolwarra-Lorn (ZL3)
Wednesday 11th April
Lance York Oval @ 7pm

This is a battle of two lower league teams but it's one on paper that looks a really interesting encounter. Suburbs won 6-1 in their first ZL1 match of the year whilst Bolwarra opened the ZL3 season with a Friday night 5-1 win over the Maitland Raptors. The Bushrangers knocked out ZL1 Maryland-Fletcher in Round 2 but the Kingfishers are a whole new level of challenge. Garden Suburb should be a little too strong in attack.

My Tip: Garden Suburb 4-1 Bolwarra-Lorn

====================================================

Hamilton Azzurri (ZL1) v Merewether Advance (ZL2)
Wednesday 11th April
AthField @ 6:30pm

Newysports is at the AthField on Wednesday and this game has been added as a bit of a bonus. Another chance to see the entertainment machine that is Hamilton Azzurri. A match against long-time Zone League club Merewether Advance will be very interesting. Both clubs drew their opening games so very tough to judge how this might go. Merewether have troubled some decent clubs in pre-season and will not be an easy beat. Could come down to penalties.

My Tip: Hamilton Azzurri 2-2 Merewether Advance (Azzurri on PENS)

====================================================

Cooks Hill United (NL1) v Kahibah FC (NL1)
Wednesday 11th April
AthField @ 8pm

This sides met just a week and a half ago and things have changed a fair bit since then. Cooks Hill's unbeatable defence was penetrated four times at Thornton and a rock in the backline Alex Gillespie was sent off. Still they'll come into this with confidence after beating Kahibah in Round 3. If anything Kahibah have gotten worse. Their defence is rattled and if Cooks Hill are on, this could indeed get ugly.

My Tip: Cooks Hill United 4-1 Kahibah FC

====================================================

Raymond Terrace (ZL1) v Beresfield United (ZPL)
Thursday 12th April
King Park @ 7pm

Can we classify this as a local derby? Bero make the short trip over the river to King Park where they meet a Raymond Terrace side looking to pick up a big FFA Cup win. The Hawks were beaten on the weekend but as a ZPL side against a ZL1 outfit, they go into this expected to win. Based on the news out of both clubs, an upset could very well be on the card. Bero don't look the same quality as recent years at this early stage.

My Tip: Raymond Terrace 2-1 Beresfield United

====================================================

Maitland JFC (ZL3) v Toronto-Awaba (NL1)
Thursday 12th April
Fieldsend Oval @ 7pm

Based on league positions, this is by far the biggest mismatch of the week. Maitland Juniors sent Hunter Simba packing in the most dramatic circumstances in Round 2 and will no doubt be keen to pick up one of their greatest wins right here. Toronto looked a bit off in the first couple of weeks but found form on the weekend with a first ever win against rivals Kahibah. Cup football is never easy but if the Stags don't progress then that's just very, very poor. They play four divisions higher and should be able to show it.

My Tip: Maitland JFC 1-5 Toronto-Awaba
