PART 71: Grimsby Career Mode-FIFA 17

UEFA Europa League Group Stage Draw:

Ty Stedman-"Well it is what it is is. We didn't expect an easy draw and we didn't get an easy draw. This is a difficult competition for us regardless of which clubs we play. We got past Kilmarnock but even that had some issues when we conceded the away goal and what not. It's a big task for us.

As for the teams, Sporting Lisbon are the top side in group and we avoided clubs like AC Milan, Roma and Valencia so it's not too bad. It'll be extremely tough for us to get points, especially over there in Lisbon against a team of that quality so the other teams in the group are our main threats in my mind.

Heerenveen finished 3rd in the Dutch league last season so no doubt they'll be a tricky opponent and of course Hearts got past Rangers and finished 2nd behind Celtic in Scotland. There's no easy games. Obviously we'll take it one game at a time but yes the goal is to of course qualify for the Round of 32."

Premier League-Matchday 3-Sunday 29nd August 2021
GRIMSBY TOWN (D.Sturridge) 1 def. Norwich City 0
Blundell Park
Crowd: 9,023

Ty Stedman-"This was similar to the Southampton match. Another team returning to the Premier League and trying to hit some form early on. They play a decent brand and we had it tough for the majority of the match. Teams like Norwich are defensive-minded which makes getting past them just that much more difficult.

Daniel Sturridge grabbed a decent goal to win it for us and he now has four goals in the opening five games. That's why we've brought someone like Daniel in. His clinical in his chances and he just possesses so much attacking prowess. Whether we team him and Trent up or have the lone striker, Daniel Sturridge brings class every week."

Signing News: Patrick Bamford Joins Grimsby:

Ty Stedman-"We lost both Bruno Fornaroli and Besart Berisha to retirement at the end of last season and whilst we've left it late, we've finally made a signing to fill the void up front. Of course Omar Bogle is still on the books but we wanted a big name and Patrick Bamford is just that.

His record with Burnley the past few years is decent and his vision is pretty good so we're expecting big things. Having Sturridge, Buhagiar and now Bamford up front gives us a lot of variety and choice. Goals can come from all three which is nice."

Premier League-Matchday 4-Saturday 11th September 2021
Sunderland 0 def by. GRIMSBY TOWN (Oscar) 1
Stadium of Light
Crowd: 43,034

Ty Stedman-"That was a pretty entertaining game for such an early stage of the season. Both teams sat inside the top four after the first three games and Sunderland did beat us here last year so we had a bit of revenge on the mind. We knew class would be needed to overcome a team hungry for a home win.

Tactically you might have noticed a lot more of a composed style of possession. We're well known for our high-pace counter-attack but today I wanted to try and control midfield a bit more. The only goal came through the middle which is different for us. Oscar's first goal for the club gives us a very important three points at this early stage."

UEFA Europa League-Matchday 1-Thursday 16th September 2021
GRIMSBY TOWN (Adama & T.Buhagiar) 2 def. SC Heerenveen (M.Te Vdere) 1
Blundell Park
Crowd: 9,005

Ty Stedman-"I'm absolutely delighted with our performance tonight. It was the best game we've played in awhile, definitely the best this season which is crucial considering it was the first matchday of the group stage. Heerenveen were an unknown proposition for us so a win is wonderful.

Attacking-wise I thought we were brilliant. On another day we would have scored four or five. And it was nice to get two quickfire goals right before half-time. We've had periods before where we score a goal and then get on the front foot without doubling the lead so that turned out to be vital with their late goal. The better team won on the night but we made it tough for ourselves."

Premier League-Matchday 5-Sunday 19th September 2021
GRIMSBY TOWN (P.Bamford) 1 def. Newcastle United 0
Blundell Park
Crowd: 9,007

Ty Stedman-"Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I wouldn't call us top four contenders or anything along those lines after five games. We sat top of the league at this point two years ago and finished 12th so we can't start thinking about what might happen when the end of the season comes around again.

As for today, we looked very, very good early on and Marco Rojas did a lot of good work to get in behind and provide the ball for Patrick Bamford's easy tap-in. But once again, we controlled the first half and were unable to convert chances to put some distance between us and Newcastle. Nonetheless we did enough and we'll take confidence from our last four performances."
