PREVIEW: NNSW NPL Youth Round 17

Firstly before I start the NPL Youth previews for this round, I myself cannot get my head around the catch-up game system Northern NSW Football are trying to run for their own elite youth development competition. Some teams have had games declared 0-0 draws, some teams are playing mid-week games for 3 points and some teams are playing for six points on the weekend. It's a total mess for anyone who's trying to keep track of ladders and what not.

Now I know this isn't a 1st Grade competition or anything like that but there'll be trophies handed out on Grand Final day. What happens if one of these declared 0-0 draws costs a team the two points they might need to reach the finals. I haven't looked at the ladders too much just yet but I know Edgeworth's Under 13's have had their 10-game winning streak ended by a wash-out.

Again I know a lot of the kids just want to get out there and play football but for a level like NPL Youth Under 17 (players about to break into the senior competition) it simply has to be better in 2016. I'm not sure how they handle NPL Youth wash-outs in Sydney but I can almost guarantee it's better than Northern NSW.

So some reading this might think I'm just overreacting but the fact is the parents of these kids pay big money to have their child play in an elite junior development competition and some of these kids have already missed several games this season.

How about using that fantastic facility at Speers Point to catch-up games that have been washed-out. Or how about allowing two teams that have moved their games to Monday, arranged match times with referees and had everything in place to actually play their game. A lot can be done better.

I've been told Lambton v Charlestown this weekend is being played for six points so if you know any others please let me know as it's very hard to keep track of anything. A simple article on Northern NSW's website would suffice.

I'm generally annoyed as I spend the better part of my week previewing games for the weekend and not knowing if the games are for three-points or six-points is just not good enough. The policies and guidelines surrounding this competition need to change in the off-season and I'm sure they will as I know a lot of parents have had enough. Anyway onto the previews...

*Update: I've just completed the first Under 13 preview and decided I'm going a different route this week and just writing a preview for each grade's match of the round. I'm a bit short on time and need to get the Zone League stuff written so that's the way I'll go here.

I was going to write two paragraphs, one discussing if the game was six points and one for three. It's 2:30pm now and if I did that I'd be here until at least 5pm or so. Apologies to the parents and players who read this site but it's going to a be a short one this week.

NNSW NPL Youth Under 13 Preview:

Newysports.com's Under 13 Match of the Round
Weston Bears (4th) v Edgeworth Eagles (2nd)

If anyone from Weston or Edgeworth's clubs can clarify if these games are for six-points or not it'd be greatly appreciated. Anyway if these games are for six-points than they could be six crucial points for the young Bears. Sitting fourth and five clear of the Emerging Jets Under 12's, the Bears could go a long way towards securing a finals spot if they pick up maximum points.

Even if the game is played for three points it's still important that Weston get the points at home as it'd move them further ahead of the Emerging Jets. Edgeworth will be displeased that their winning streak was ended by a wash-out being declared a 0-0 draw so I think they'll be keen to get out to Weston and win this one.

My Tip: Weston 1-3 Edgeworth

NNSW NPL Youth Under 14 Preview:

Newysports.com's Under 14 Match of the Round
Hamilton Olympic (5th) v Emerging Jets Under 13's (4th)

This is the most crucial game in the Under 14's this weekend as Hamilton look to avoid falling too far behind the 4th-placed Under 13 Emerging Jets. The Jets were 3-0 winners when these sides last met so Hamilton are going to need to lift their game or risk dropping three crucial points.

The Jets 13's could end the round of top of the table depending on other results but looking at recent results I think this will be closer than the 3-0 Jets win earlier this season. I'm picking the draw here.

My Tip: Hamilton 2-2 Emerging Jets 13's

NNSW NPL Youth Under 15 Preview:

Newysports.com's Under 15 Match of the Round
Hamilton Olympic (2nd) v Emerging Jets U/14's (6th)

After drawing 2-2 with ladder-leaders Broadmeadow Magic last weekend, the Olympic 15's can take over from their arch rivals at the top of the table if they can beat the Under 14 Emerging Jets on Saturday afternoon. They were comfortable 4-1 winners away from home against the Jets last time out so why not again?

My Tip: Hamilton 3-1 Emerging Jets U/14's

NNSW NPL Youth Under 17 Preview:

Newysports.com's Under 17 Match of the Round
Hamilton Olympic (1st) v Emerging Jets U/15's (4th)

I didn't want to name Hamilton v Emerging Jets as Match of the Round in three out of four grades but it really is an important match-up across the four age groups. Olympic's leading the way in the Under 17's after knocking off previous ladder-leaders Broadmeadow last week so they'll be full of confidence going into this one.

The Emerging Jets 15's haven't played in a few weeks now due to wash-outs and the bye but of course they'll be match-fit if their training schedule is anything to go by. Still, Hamilton won 2-1 last time against this Jets side so I'm tipping them to do the same again.

My Tip: Hamilton 2-1 Emerging Jets U/15's

P.S, I know it says Round 16 in the tipping graphics...just ignore that!
