PREVIEW: NNSW NPL Round 13

Newysports.com's Match of the Round
1st Grade: Lambton Jaffas (3rd) v Hamilton Olympic (2nd)
Kickoff: Saturday 11/7 2:30pm
Last Time They Met: Hamilton 1-1 Lambton

Hamilton have been superb this season but their record against the inner-city teams hasn't been that good. A draw with Lambton last time they met, two draws with Adamstown. In five meetings with inner-city teams this season, they've won just the one game. I point this out as the inner-city derbies are always fiery and very tough to win.

I caught the Jaffas stunning comeback last week against Weston and they're a side that have just do not give up, regardless of the scoreline. Hamilton themselves are coming off the back of their first loss of the season so this Match of the Round is crucial to say the very least.

If the Jaffas can knock off Hamilton, they'll move into second and if Edgeworth fall to Maitland, then the defending champions will go top of the table. Hamilton though will provide a tough challenge, one greater than what Weston provided last weekend.

I honestly have no idea which way to go here. The Jaffas are always fairly decent in front of their home crowd and Hamilton are a very tough side to break down. The draw sounds good in this game.

My Tip: Lambton 1-1 Hamilton

Newysports.com's Under 22 Match of the Round
Under 22's: Lambton Jaffas (2nd) v Hamilton Olympic (4th)
Kickoff: Saturday 11/7 12:45pm
Last Time They Met: Hamilton 1-1 Lambton

Just like 1st Grade, these sides are both in the top four with Lambton having won their last game against Weston and Hamilton having lost to Edgeworth and just like 1st Grade, these sides drew 1-1 earlier this season. Lambton are chasing the premiership but Hamilton will know Magic are hot on their tails in fifth spot. It's going to be a close one but I can't go past Lambton.

My Tip: Lambton 2-1 Hamilton

Under 19's: Lambton Jaffas (6th) v Hamilton Olympic (2nd)
Kickoff: Saturday 11/7 11:00am
Last Time They Met: Hamilton 3-1 Lambton

Hamilton lost to Edgeworth last week and will be keen on bouncing back straight away as a loss this week could see their minor premiership hopes go down the drain. Lambton have lost three straight games and considering they lost 3-1 to Hamilton last time the met, I think the visitors will get the points in this game on Saturday.

My Tip: Lambton 1-3 Hamilton

Weston Workers Bears "Old Bears Day"
1st Grade: Newcastle Jets Youth (7th) v Weston Workers (4th)
Kickoff: Saturday 11/7 2:30pm
Last Time They Met: Weston 0-1 Jets Youth

I mentioned in my New-FM preview of Cessnock City v Belmont-Swansea that clubs always step up for Old Boys Day, especially clubs from the Valley. I don't want to call Weston a country town but essentially it is and the community is right behind their football team. There'll be some feeling in this one as the Bears of today try and honour the Bears of yesteryear.

I was on hand for Weston's game last week and after looking near-perfect in a dominant first half, it all fell to pieces in the second stanza. Weston on their day can beat any side in the competition and they don't do it in pretty style like some sides, they do it with precision and hard work. They play the game in a much different way to a team like Lambton or Magic.

The Jets Youth beat Weston earlier this season but they've been out of form until a much-needed win last week against South Cardiff. I think Weston will get the job done on Saturday and avoid dropping out of the top four.

My Tip: Jets Youth 1-3 Weston

Under 22's: Emerging Jets U/18's (3rd) v Weston Workers (6th)
Kickoff: Saturday 11/7 12:45pm
Last Time They Met: Weston 1-5 Emerging Jets U18's

Weston have been in irregular form to say the very least throughout the Under 22's this season. When they met the Jets U/18's in Round 4, they were on the back end of a 5-1 defeat. The Bears took it to 2nd-placed Lambton last week so they'll offer more than they did in that 5-1 loss but my tip is going to be the Jets.

My Tip: Emerging Jets U18's 2-0 Weston

Newysports.com's Under 19 Match of the Round
Under 19's: Emerging Jets U/16's (5th) v Weston Workers (1st)
Kickoff: Saturday 11/7 11:00am
Last Time They Met: Weston 2-2 Emerging Jets U16's

Weston's got a lot going for them in the Under 19's this season. Sitting six clear at the top of the table and still unbeaten through two-thirds of the season, I can't see them having too much trouble against the out-of-form Jets on Saturday. The Under 16 Jet's were stunned in a heavy loss to South Cardiff last week and whilst I'm not sure if they were down on numbers in that game, I'm tipping Weston to avenge the earlier 2-2 draw between this sides.

My Tip: Emerging Jets U16's 1-3 Weston

1st Grade: Adamstown Rosebud (6th) v Broadmeadow Magic (5th)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 2:30pm
Last Time They Met: Broadmeadow 3-2 Adamstown

Personally for me, this game is a convenient time and venue as I play at Adamstown's outer grounds on Sunday at 12:30pm so this works perfectly for me and it should prove to be a decent game as well between two sides that are trying to force their way into the top four.

Broadmeadow returned to the winners' circle after a poor month of results last week with a decent 3-0 win over Maitland. Adamstown on the other hand were stunned at home by lowly Charlestown City so they'll know they have to put on a better showing against a resurgent Magic outfit.

Last time they met, the two teams played out a five goal thriller and whilst I wasn't there that night, I do believe Magic came from behind and stole all three points right at the depth so Adamstown will have to defend their lead if they can grab a lead this time round. Ultimately I don't think they will as Magic's going to be my tip to win this game.

My Tip: Adamstown 1-3 Broadmeadow

Under 22's: Adamstown Rosebud (10th) v Broadmeadow Magic (5th)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 12:45pm
Last Time They Met: Broadmeadow 6-1 Adamstown

Looking at the recent form and of course the ladder positions of these two sides, this game should be rather academic. Adamstown are not doing too much in the 22's this season and with Broadmeadow coming off a 4-0 win over Maitland, this could be another tough day at the office for the Buds. Magic won the Round 4 meeting 6-1 so they should be able to win again on Sunday.

My Tip: Adamstown 0-4 Broadmeadow

Under 19's: Adamstown Rosebud (9th) v Broadmeadow Magic (3rd)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 11:00am
Last Time They Met: Broadmeadow 1-0 Adamstown

Adamstown's Under 19's picked up a much-needed win last weekend against Charlestown City but the test they face this week will be a much-greater one as Broadmeadow Magic come to town. The 3rd-placed Magic put five past hapless Maitland last weekend and I have fears Adamstown could be on the back end of a big defeat as well if the visitors can play to their potential again this weekend.

My Tip: Adamstown 1-3 Broadmeadow

1st Grade: Maitland F.C (8th) v Edgeworth F.C (1st)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 2:30pm
Last Time They Met: Edgeworth 4-1 Maitland

Maitland were flying high until they met a desperate Magic side last weekend and ultimately went down to Broadmeadow 3-0. This week the face a very tough test when the ladder-leading Edgeworth Eagles come to Cooks Square Park with confidence after outclassing Hamilton last week and knocking Olympic off their perch on top of the table.

As mentioned in my preview of the South Cardiff v Charlestown game, I think Maitland's done enough to avoid relegation but if they suffer a form slump than anything could happen. This will no doubt be the toughest test of the season for the Magpies.

Edgeworth just cannot be stopped at the moment and with the huge FFA Cup clash with Melbourne City on the horizon, they'll no doubt want to keep up the pace and continue their form going into such an important game. Maitland's got a steely defence but I have a feeling they'll be struggling to contain Edgeworth's pace and skill here.

My Tip: Maitland 1-4 Edgeworth

Under 22's: Maitland F.C (9th) v Edgeworth F.C (1st)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 12:45pm
Last Time They Met: Edgeworth 2-0 Maitland

Like the Under 19's fixture between these sides, I can only see this one going the one way. Edgeworth are flying high in top spot and really shouldn't be dropping points to a struggling Maitland side that were defeated 4-0 last week by Broadmeadow. The Eagles stormed home to a 3-0 win over a quality Hamilton side so this should be another win for the ladder-leaders.

*Shoutout to the Maitland goalkeeper who suffered a seizure on field last weekend. Definitely a scary moment for all involved and hopefully he'll come good soon enough. Credit to all who handled the situation calmly and expertly. These things are more important than the game at the end of the day.

My Tip: Maitland 1-4 Edgeworth

Under 19's: Maitland F.C (10th) v Edgeworth F.C (4th)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 11:00am
Last Time They Met: Edgeworth 4-1 Maitland

Maitland's Under 19's are not having the best season and sit four points behind Adamstown in last place. They went down 5-0 to Magic last weekend and considering they lost 4-1 to their opponents, Edgeworth last time they met and considering the Eagles pulled off an impressive win over Hamilton last week, this is a pretty easy call to make in my opinion.

My Tip: Maitland 0-4 Edgeworth

*Note: I just realized that I've tipped Maitland to lose heavily in all grades. I don't like doing that to clubs but Edgeworth are very strong across all three grades so prove me wrong Magpies. That's the point of these tips.

///------------------------------------------------///

1st Grade: South Cardiff (10th) v Charlestown City (9th)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 2:30pm
Last Time They Met: Charlestown City 1-3 South Cardiff

This game is one of the biggest of the season in the Northern NSW NPL as it will no doubt go a long way towards determining which of these sides will stay up and which will go down to the New-FM 1st Division in 2016. Maitland I think have done enough to avoid relegation and in my opinion, it will be one of these two sides, perhaps the loser of this game.

Interestingly enough, Charlestown sit above South Cardiff on the table, four points ahead to be exact, however the Gunners beat Charlestown on their home turf 3-1 back in Round 4. Still, the Blues have pulled off a couple of decent wins and moved four clear. It's do or die in my honest opinion for the home side.

A loss for South Cardiff would see them fall at least five points behind the next highest team. With the run in South Cardiff have got before the end of the season, this is a must win game. I'm sure everyone at Ulinga Oval know how important this game is and I think if the Gunners can field a near full-strength squad and play to their best, they can certainly get the job done.

My Tip: South Cardiff 2-1 Charlestown

Under 22's: South Cardiff (7th) v Charlestown City (8th)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 12:45pm
Last Time They Met: Charlestown City 3-2 South Cardiff

Another lower-table clash between two sides that don't have too much chance of making the finals. Charlestown in fact are in a fight to avoid the wooden spoon so they'll certainly be keen to record the double over South Cardiff. The Gunners were gunned down by the Jets last week whilst Charlestown drew with Adamstown 1-1. It's going to be the draw that I tip in this one.

My Tip: South Cardiff 1-1 Charlestown

Under 19's: South Cardiff (8th) v Charlestown City (7th)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 11:00am
Last Time They Met: Charlestown City 1-3 South Cardiff

This is one of those games that's tough to predict as it's between two lower mid-table teams and there's not too much riding on the result. South Cardiff won the Round 4 meeting between these two sides and considering they put the Emerging Jets to the sword last weekend, I think the Gunners will consider themselves a good chance of victory at their home ground. They've got my approval for this one.

My Tip: South Cardiff 2-0 Charlestown City
