PREVIEW: New-FM 1st Division Round 18

*Apologies for the tips maybe being a bit short this week. I've had a rough few days and am keen to just get the job done quickly today. Sorry!

1st Grade: Cooks Hill United (6th) v Lake Macquarie City (2nd)
Kickoff: Saturday 11/7 2:30pm
Last Time They Met: Lake Macquarie City 5-3 Cooks Hill United

I've enjoyed watching Cooks Hill's season this year and if there's one game I was annoyed at not making it was the original clash between these two sides as from all reports it was a pretty decent match. They square off again this Saturday with Lakes' promotion hopes taking centre stage.

The Cookers have lost two games straight, both times losing 4-1 to Kahibah and then to Singleton last week. Their already slim finals hopes have taken a major dent and a loss this weekend would be the final nail in the coffin for their hopes of making the playoffs.

I saw Lakes play for the first time last night and was impressed with their never-say-die attitude. They are the promotion-favourites based on the fact that they have a game in hand on Valentine but looking at the remaining fixtures, it'll be a tough ask for Lakes to finish top of the table as they've got a tough schedule, starting with Saturday's game. Despite being a Cookers man, I think Lakes will get the points on Saturday. Good luck to both teams ahead of what should be an entertaining match.

My Tip: Cooks Hill 1-3 Lakes

Under 23's: Cooks Hill United (7th) v Lake Macquarie City (2nd)
Kickoff: Saturday 11/7 12:45pm
Last Time They Met: Lake Macquarie City 2-1 Cooks Hill United

Cooks Hill's 23's picked up what was one of their best wins of the season at Singleton last week but the task gets a lot harder when they take on Lakes this Saturday. I saw a bit of Lakes' match last night and they scored a late goal to draw 2-2 with Wallsend so they're definitely not going to go away like Singleton did once the game got out of reach. I'm tipping the visitors in this one but the Cookers' 23's are unpredictable somedays.

My Tip: Cooks Hill 1-3 Lakes

Newysports.com's Under 19 Match of the Round
Under 19's: Cooks Hill United (4th) v Lake Macquarie City (3rd)
Kickoff: Saturday 11/7 11:00am
Last Time They Met: Lake Macquarie City 0-0 Cooks Hill United

I'm in a conundrum at the moment between whether I watch this game or go to the University and play my own match. My team's struggling and a day off would do me well so I may stick around for the 19's match. Anyway regardless of my decision, this game promises to be one of the best matches across the entire comp this weekend.

Cooks Hill have some talent in the Under 19's and they managed to hold Lakes to a 0-0 draw last time they met. Lakes are still a premiership-hope and will definitely provide a challenge for Cooks Hill. The Cookers will need to defend well but if they fire like they did at Singleton last week, they may be a chance of gaining three points. It'll be a close one though.

My Tip: Cooks Hill 3-2 Lakes

Newysports.com's Under 17 Match of the Round
Under 17's: Cooks Hill United (3rd) v Lake Macquarie City (2nd)
Kickoff: Saturday 11/7 9:15am
Last Time They Met: Lake Macquarie City 5-3 Cooks Hill United

I've been watching the Cookers 17's for most of the second half of the season but missed last weekend's 3-1 victory over Singleton. I'm very keen to finally see the Lakes' 17's take to the field as I've heard some very positive things about this side.

This should be an absolute cracker, especially if Cooks Hill can find their best form and with Lakes not being too convincing as of late they might have a chance of an upset. The Roosters are not to be underestimated as their last outing was a 7-0 win over Cessnock.

Defence is going to be key in this game although in my opinion I think the goalscorers will shine and we'll see a goalfest like the last time they met. I don't like tipping against Cooks Hill in any grade obviously but the premiership-race is heating up and Lakes need to keep winning.

My Tip: Cooks Hill 2-4 Lakes

*Note: This is Valentine's last home game of the season before they take on four straight away games, starting at The Gardens next Wednesday. I'd just like to thank the club for their support of this site and for publishing my material in their match-day programs. I'm very thankful for that and might even come out for the Semi Final if I'm free on the day. Good luck with the rest of the season and in the race for promotion. Cheers!

*P.S, West Wallsend have also been great to me this season, sharing a lot of my stuff on their Facebook page which is great.

1st Grade: Valentine F.C (1st) v West Wallsend (8th)
Kickoff: Saturday 11/7 3:30pm
Last Time They Met: West Wallsend 0-6 Valentine

West Wallsend started the season in some very good form and early on they looked like certainties for finals and perhaps even a chance at the minor premiership. Things were travelling smoothly for the Bluebells until the day they met the Valentine Phoenix.

The visiting Phoenix came to Johnston Park and put six past a stunned Bluebells' outfit. Ever since that day, West Wallsend simply have not hit the heights they hit early on in the season. That same day set Valentine's season on fire and if it wasn't for one or two poor results, they'd be a shoe-in for promotion.

Obviously West Wallsend are no hope of making finals but they still need to avoid the wooden spoon and finish higher than last season. They've got two games in hand on last place Cessnock so I think they'll avoid the spoon but I can't see them avoiding defeat against and in-form, promotion-chasing Valentine side.

With Lakes' mid-week victory against Wallsend, the Phoenix know that the race for promotion is heating up and every week is crucial. West Wallsend will need a top-notch performance and looking over recent form I just don't like their chances at all. Valentine won't lay off. They're very good at putting teams to the sword and I think it'll be a case of that on Saturday.

My Tip: Valentine 6-1 West Wallsend

Under 23's: Valentine F.C (1st) v West Wallsend (11th)
Kickoff: Saturday 11/7 1:45pm
Last Time They Met: West Wallsend 0-5 Valentine

Valentine's run-away premiership-chasing 23's were held to a 1-1 draw at Kahibah last week and will know that this week could go a long way towards securing the title, especially after Lakes dropped points mid-week. The Phoenix reserve's won 5-0 last time these sides met so there's not much favouring the underdogs in this first versus last clash.

My Tip: Valentine 6-1 West Wallsend

Under 19's: Valentine F.C (2nd) v West Wallsend (5th)
Kickoff: Saturday 11/7 12:00pm
Last Time They Met: West Wallsend 0-4 Valentine

Valentine's Under 19's won big last time they met West Wallsend but something tells me it won't be so easy this time round with Westy sitting in fifth. Now the Bluebells are still mathematically a chance of making the finals but it will be an uphill battle. Valentine on the other hand are one point off the top of the table with a game in hand so the premiership is still up for grabs for the Phoenix and I'm putting them down to win this game against West Wallsend.

My Tip: Valentine 2-0 West Wallsend

Under 17's: Valentine F.C (9th) v West Wallsend (6th)
Kickoff: Saturday 11/7 10:15am
Last Time They Met: West Wallsend 4-0 Valentine

I think both of these teams have some quality players, just not a quality style across the park. West Wallsend have some very decent youngsters but have failed to make it click and Valentine just haven't found much success at all in the 17's this season. I think both teams will be much better next season.

Anyway, West Wallsend were 4-0 victors last time these sides met and if they can fire they'll do the same again on Saturday. The finals are still mathematically possible for the Bluebells' but I can't see that happening. I can see a victory on Saturday happening though.

My Tip: Valentine 0-3 West Wallsend

///-------------------------------------///

1st Grade: Toronto-Awaba (10th) v Thornton (9th)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 2:30pm
Last Time They Met: Thornton 0-2 Toronto-Awaba

This is a very important game for both these sides as they look to move further away from bottom-placed Cessnock City. Toronto-Awaba won the last meeting between these sides but Thornton have been in a bit of form as of late, knocking off the likes of Valentine and more recently Wallsend.

It's a tough one to predict as both teams will be keen to avoid defeat so the draw comes to mind a little bit. Toronto's home record against lower sides has been decent so I'm really not sure which way to go. If Thornton can defend like they have as of late (like in last week's 1-0 win) then they'll have a decent chance of winning. My first thought was a draw so that's what I'll go with.

My Tip: Toronto-Awaba 1-1 Thornton

Under 23's: Toronto-Awaba (10th) v Thornton (4th)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 12:45pm
Last Time They Met: Thornton 2-0 Toronto-Awaba

Thornton's Under 23's stumbled over the line against Wallsend and really need to win this week to stay three points clear of Kahibah. The Stags have been out of form as of late and have yet to draw a game this season (3 wins and 12 losses) so I'm going with the visiting Redbacks for this game.

My Tip: Toronto-Awaba 0-2 Thornton

Under 19's: Toronto-Awaba (11th) v Thornton (7th)
Kickoff: Sunday 11/7 11:00am
Last Time They Met: Thornton 3-0 Toronto-Awaba

Toronto-Awaba's Under 19's have the worst record in the entire New-FM 1st Division this season but with four out of five remaining fixtures to be played at Lyall Peacock Field, the Stags will like their chances of picking up at least one win this season. Thornton are in good form though so they're going to be my tip in this one.

My Tip: Toronto-Awaba 0-3 Thornton

Under 17's: Toronto-Awaba (8th) v Thornton (11th)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 9:15am
Last Time They Met: Thornton 1-3 Toronto-Awaba

Talking about teams without a win this season, Thornton's Under 17's are running out of time to record their maiden win in 2015. I think this game is going to be a tough one for them as Toronto-Awaba are very strong in this grade on their day. Personally I hope Thornton can grab at least one win this season although I don't think it'll be this one.

My Tip: Toronto-Awaba 2-0 Thornton

Newysports.com's Match of the Round
Cessnock City Old Boy's Day
1st Grade: Cessnock City (11th) v Belmont-Swansea (5th)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 2:30pm
Last Time They Met: Belmont-Swansea 0-1 Cessnock City

Why give this match my Match of the Round status you ask. Well, firstly I was going to name Cooks Hill v Lakes as Match of the Round but decided against it for a couple of reasons. It is Cessnock's old boy's day and a very important day for that club. The main reason I named this as Match of the Round is because it's a team trying to avoid the wooden spoon against a team sitting in fifth, trying to move into the top four. It's a crucial game and then some.

What makes this game even more intriguing is that the Hornets stunned the Belswans earlier this season at Blacksmiths. That game ended 1-0 and if Cessnock can do the same again, they may jump off the bottom of the ladder. It's do-or-die for Cessnock.

Old Boy's Day is always a factor to take in. It doesn't matter what sport or what level, players always rise to the occasion on Old Boy's Day. Belmont-Swansea though will be a challenge and a half as they look to stay in touch with the top four.

After beating West Wallsend 6-1 last weekend, I think the Belswans are odds-on favourites in this one. As mentioned, it's Old Boy's Day at the Hornet's Ground and an upset wouldn't surprise me but for me personally, I'm going with Belmont-Swansea to keep their good form in tact.

My Tip: Cessnock City 1-4 Belmont-Swansea

Newysports.com's Under 23 Match of the Round
Under 23's: Cessnock City (3rd) v Belmont-Swansea (6th)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 12:45pm
Last Time They Met: Belmont-Swansea 2-5 Cessnock City

Belmont-Swansea are only three points behind fourth-placed Thornton in the Under 23's competition but considering the Redbacks have two games in hands, the Belswans need to keep winning if they're to have a chance of making the finals.

Cessnock's Under 23's are by far the best performing Hornets' outfit this season and won 5-2 when these sides met earlier in the season. A win here would go a very long way towards securing a finals spot and on the club's old boy's day, I think the Hornets will grab the win in this grade.

My Tip: Cessnock City 3-1 Belmont-Swansea

Under 19's: Cessnock City (8th) v Belmont-Swansea (1st)
Kickoff: Sunday 11/7 11:00am
Last Time They Met: Belmont-Swansea 11-1 Cessnock City

The Hornets' 19's will not want to remember their last match against Belmont-Swansea as it got ugly, very ugly. To be honest, I was told Cessnock were lacking numbers that day and it showed as the ladder-leading Belswans put them to the slaughter. I'm tipping Belmont-Swansea to win again on the weekend and keep their premiership-chase travelling nicely. There's absolutely no way this ends in double digits though.

My Tip: Cessnock City 1-3 Belmont-Swansea

Under 17's: Cessnock City (10th) v Belmont-Swansea (5th)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 9:15am
Last Time They Met: Belmont-Swansea 9-0 Cessnock City

Cessnock's 17's have endured a very tough season and in their last four home games, they've shipped 26 goals and scored just one. It's stats like that and the fact that Belmont-Swansea won the first meeting 9-0 that make me think the visitors will win this one. Cessnock shouldn't let this season get the best of them, things will improve next campaign but this Sunday could be a long morning.

My Tip: Cessnock City 1-7 Belmont-Swansea

/////--------------------------------------------------------------/////
///-------------------------------------///

*This Game is to be played at KAHIBAH OVAL as a Singleton home game due to the earlier match this season being moved from Kahibah to Singleton's Howe Park. So the Strikers are the HOME SIDE at KAHIBAH OVAL...got it? Good!

1st Grade: Singleton (7th) v Kahibah F.C (4th)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 3:15pm
Last Time They Met: Kahibah 3-2 Singleton

Singleton's slim finals hopes received a slight boost when they comfortably saw off Cooks Hill last week but it's still a massive mountain to climb if the Strikers want to make the top four. A win over Kahibah would certainly make things interesting. Kahibah have a very tough run-in and considering their form's a bit shaky as of late, their spot in the finals is not secured just yet, especially with the Belswans right behind them.

Singleton took it to Kahibah last time they played and went down 3-2 but at Kahibah Oval, I think the Green and Blacks will be primed to pick up a very important win on the weekend. It will be a close contest but Kahibah I think will get over the line.

My Tip: Singleton 2-3 Kahibah

Under 23's: Singleton (9th) v Kahibah F.C (5th)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 1:30pm
Last Time They Met: Kahibah 3-1 Singleton

Singleton's Under 23's didn't offer much at all against Cooks Hill last week and against a Kahibah side that are seeking to enter the top four with some end of season form, I think the Strikers will struggle to get anything out of this game. Kahibah won the earlier meeting at Howe Park 3-1 and I'll tip them to do the same this time round.

My Tip: Singleton 1-3 Kahibah

Under 19's: Singleton (10th) v Kahibah F.C (6th)
Kickoff: Sunday 11/7 11:45am
Last Time They Met: Kahibah 2-1 Singleton

Singleton's Under 19's were outclassed by Cooks Hill last weekend, the same Cooks Hill side that put five past Kahibah the previous week so neither of these teams are in much form at the moment and neither are in finals contention. Singleton are only two points above bottom-placed Toronto so they'll be keen to win to avoid any potential wooden spoon but Kahibah's going to be my pick for this game.

My Tip: Singleton 0-2 Kahibah

Under 17's: Singleton (7th) v Kahibah F.C (1st)
Kickoff: Sunday 12/7 10:00am
Last Time They Met: Kahibah 3-1 Singleton

I've seen both these sides play in recent weeks and trust me when I say, this could be a tough one for Singleton. I don't like tipping heavily against 17 year old's but this is necessary as Kahibah are just too good. The Green and Blacks flogged Cooks Hill 7-0, the same Cookers side that beat Singleton last week so common sense says Kahibah win this and with the premiership still up for grabs, that's the way I'm going.

My Tip: Singleton 0-5 Kahibah F.C
