PREVIEW: Zone Football League Round 11

Zone Premier League Round 11 Preview:'s ZPL Match of the Round
Dudley-Redhead (7th) v Cardiff City (5th)
Last Time They Met: Cardiff City 4-2 Dudley-Redhead

I've called this one the match of the round as it's sure to be a tight contest between two sides that are evenly-matched and produced a six-goal game last time they met. Dudley are in need of a win and would boost their finals hopes with a result on Sunday whilst Cardiff could very well jump into the top four with a win. I'm going to back a draw as I can't really think of a winner.

My Tip: Draw 2-2

Newcastle Suns (8th) v New Lambton (4th)
Last Time They Met: New Lambton 4-1 Newcastle Suns

The Suns are no easybeats and proved that last time out when they took Beresfield to the absolute limit. I think they'll show a lot more this time round then they did in their 4-1 away loss to New Lambton earlier this season. Still, the Eagles are sitting precariously on the edge of the top four and a loss here could see them drop a spot or two. I think the Eagles will get over the line but it won't be easy.

My Tip: Newcastle Suns 1-2 New Lambton

University F.C (3rd) v Barnsley (10th)
Last Time They Met: Barnsley 0-5 University

University eased their way to a big win against Barnsley back in Round 3 and the Bulldogs haven't done too much since then to give me any confidence in tipping them. I'm sure the most ardent Barnsley supporter would admit this will be a very tough game to win at Ray Watt Oval.

My Tip: University 4-1 Barnsley

Swansea F.C (6th) v Beresfield United (1st)
Last Time They Met: Beresfield United 2-1 Swansea

Swansea have proven that they have what it takes to score goals against the higher-ranked teams but they need to do more than just score goals to win games. Back in Round 2, the Swans went down to Beresfield 2-1, which is an admirable result away from home against a strong Bero side.

Beresfield haven't been required to travel too much this season but they'll need to be wary as their last away trip ended in a disappointing 1-1 draw with Cardiff City. The ladder-leaders won't want to slip up on the weekend and I don't think they will.

My Tip: Swansea 1-3 Beresfield

Garden Suburb (9th) v Mayfield United (2nd)
Last Time They Met: Mayfield United 3-1 Garden Suburb

Garden Suburb aren't having the best season in 2015 and facing 2nd-placed Mayfield on Sunday will test the Kingfishers. The Tigers have stuttered at times this season but a 2-1 victory away to the University would have renewed their confidence and they'll be a good chance of winning again this weekend.

My Tip: Garden Suburb 1-3 Mayfield United

Zone League One Round 11 Preview:'s ZL1 Match of the Round
Warners Bay (5th) v Stockton (3rd)
Last Time They Met: Stockton 3-2 Warners Bay

This is an interesting match up as Warners Bay would overtake Stockton and potentially take their spot in the top four if they can win it. Stockton won the first meeting but this one will be tough as Warners Bay have some confidence in them, especially after upsetting Morisset last time out. Stockton lost mid-week to Jesmond and will want to avoid doing the same on the weekend. I was going to tip a draw but Warners Bay I think could take all three points.

My Tip: Warners Bay 2-1 Stockton

Westlakes Wildcats (10th) v Cooks Hill United (2nd)
Last Time They Met: Cooks Hill Utd 4-0 Westlakes Wildcats

Looking at recent form I simply cannot tip against Cooks Hill in this one. Westlakes could have a tough day on Saturday if the Cookers play like they did in the second half of last week's 5-0 catch-up game win over Kotara South. The Cookers are in a tight title race with Morisset and will certainly be hoping to avoid any potential slip-up at Rathmines.

My Tip: Westlakes 0-5 Cooks Hill United

Beresfield F.C (8th) v Jesmond F.C (4th)
Last Time They Met: Jesmond F.C 1-1 Beresfield F.C

I haven't seen very much at all of the Zone Leagues this season but I was on hand for Jesmond's thrilling FFA Cup clash with West Wallsend. Check out my review of that game at this link (

Anyway as for this weekend, I'm backing Jesmond to avenge a 1-1 draw in Round 2 and win it on Saturday. The confidence they would have got from the FFA Cup game would be enormous and it certainly showed last night when they downed the Stockton Sharks. Jesmond for me here.

My Tip: Beresfield FC 0-3 Jesmond F.C

Nelson Bay (9th) v Kotara South (6th)
Last Time They Met: Kotara South 5-3 Nelson Bay

I got to catch the first half of Kotara South's match-up with Cooks Hill and they didn't look that bad. A red card set them back and eventually they'd go down 5-0 but I think they'll be a good chance of doing the double over Nelson Bay on the weekend. The Tigers need to bounce back to form after a tough run of fixtures and as mentioned, I like their chances in this one

My Tip: Nelson Bay 0-2 Kotara South

Charlestown Jr. (7th) v Morisset United (1st)
Last Time They Met: Morisset United 9-2 Charlestown Jr.

Charlestown were absolutely demolished the last time they met Morisset United and I'm sure no-one would argue that. What I will say about Charlestown is that since then they've closed the gap between themselves and some of the higher-ranked teams. They stopped the freescoring Cooks Hill from producing another cricket score and pulled off a scrappy draw with Kotara South.

With that said, Charlestown will be up against it on the weekend and the ladder-leaders will know that any potential slip-up could very well see them drop from top spot to Cooks Hill and possibly even Stockton. Morisset need to win this and win it I think they will. It certainly won't be 9-2 though.

My Tip: Charlestown 1-3 Morisset

Zone League Two Round 11 Preview:'s ZL2 Match of the Round
Raymond Terrace (1st) v Medowie (5th)
Last Time They Met: Medowie 2-6 Raymond Terrace

The local derby between Raymond Terrace and Medowie ended badly for the team in yellow and black last time but since then, Medowie have been in some decent form. Medowie have left the lower teams behind and are just outside the top four so they've got a lot to play for on the weekend.

Raymond Terrace have won all but one game this season and that was a 2-2 draw with Hunter Simba. Make no doubt, this'll be Medowie's biggest victory of the season if they can pull it off and I'm sure they'll take the fight to their local rivals but I can't tip against the Terrace with the form they're in. On paper this looks to be the match of the round and it wouldn't surprise me to see these two sides produce one of the matches of the season in ZL2.

My Tip: Raymond Terrace 4-2 Medowie

Tenambit (10th) v Maryland-Fletcher (6th)
Last Time They Met: Maryland-Fletcher 2-2 Tenambit

The Tenambit Sharks are in dire need of a maiden win in 2015 but form for the Sharks just doesn't exist at the moment. They've had a tough run of fixtures recently and have conceded 18 goals in three games without putting one in the back of the net. Maryland-Fletcher on the other hand have a decent win against Muswellbrook and a brave showing in a 2-1 defeat to Raymond Terrace in their last two outings. Bulldogs for my money.

My Tip: Tenambit 0-2 Maryland-Fletcher

There is a catch-up game tonight (Wednesday) between Tenambit and Muswellbrook. It's arguably the best chance yet for Tenambit to pick up their first win of the season. Whether they do or not is a good question but I'll give them a chance.

Catch-Up Tip: Tenambit 2-1 Muswellbrook

Kurri Kurri (8th) v University (3rd)
Last Time They Met: University 6-2 Kurri Kurri

The University ZL2 side have won every game this season minus one, a 2-1 loss to ladder-leaders Raymond Terrace away from home. 6-2 was the scoreline back in Round 2 but I think this one will be a bit closer. Kurri aren't as bad at home as they are on the road. It'll still be a big ask to upset the Uni.

My Tip: Kurri Kurri 1-3 University

Merewether Adv. (7th) v Hunter Simba (4th)
Last Time They Met: Hunter Simba 7-2 Merewether Adv.

This was as one-sided a match-up as you'd see in this competition back in Round 2 but to Merewether's credit they've manged to produce a win and a few draws since the 7-2 loss to Simba. Still, Simba are sitting in fourth position and a win on the weekend could stretch the gap between themselves and 5th-placed Medowie. There's a huge gulf in class between the top half of the table and bottom half and this weekend will see a few examples of that.

My Tip: Merewether 1-4 Hunter Simba

Muswellbrook (9th) v Hamilton Olympic (2nd)
Last Time They Met: Hamilton Olympic 3-0 Muswellbrook

Hamilton Olympic were beaten last week by top of the table Raymond Terrace but the 2nd-placed side shouldn't have too much trouble when they travel to Victoria Park and face 9th-placed Muswellbrook. The Eagles are struggling this season and unless things turn around, they'll be on the hand of a second defeat to Hamilton.

My Tip: Muswellbrook 1-4 Hamilton Olympic

Zone League Three Round 11 Preview:'s ZL3 Match of the Round
New Lambton F.C (3rd) v Dudley-Redhead (1st)
Last Time They Met: Dudley-Redhead 3-0 New Lambton F.C

Zone League Three's match of the round comes on Saturday afternoon as 3rd-placed New Lambton host ladder-leaders Dudley-Redhead at Alder Park. The Eagles lost against Dudley 3-0 in Round 1 and although they've been in great form and scoring bucketloads of goals, beating Dudley will be a very tough ask.

Dudley are yet to lose in eight starts this season and the only time they didn't pick up maximum points was against Mayfield United. I'm going to go out on a limb and tip the draw here. New Lambton will need to play to their best though.

My Tip: Draw 1-1

Jesmond F.C (8th) v Abermain Rams (7th)
Last Time They Met: Abermain Rams 0-2 Jesmond F.C

Jesmond's last two weeks in Zone League Three have been horrific at the very least. A 7-0 loss to New Lambton was followed up by an 8-0 loss to Dudley-Redhead. I think it can be assured than Abermain won't put a cricket score on them but unless the Rams pick up their game this week I think they'll be on the receiving end of a loss here.

My Tip: Jesmond 1-3 Abermain

Kahibah F.C (4th) v Mayfield United Jr. (9th)
Last Time They Met: Mayfield United 1-7 Kahibah F.C

There hasn't been too much to write home about when it comes to Mayfield's season so far and I don't think there's too much to write about when it comes to their chances on Saturday. Kahibah beat the Tigers 7-1 away from home so there'll like their chances at Kahibah Oval.

My Tip: Kahibah 7-0 Mayfield United

Edgeworth F.C (6th) v RAAF Williamtown (5th)
Last Time They Met: RAAF Williamtown 7-5 Edgeworth F.C

Last time these sides met they produced a twelve-goal thriller. There's absolutely no way that will happen again on Sunday. Both these teams have been there or there abouts in recent times and both occupy a spot in the middle of the table so it'll no doubt be a tough one to predict. I think Edgeworth have more to lose here so I'm going to back them at home.

My Tip: Edgeworth 3-2 RAAF
