Cessnock Overcome Wests In Season Opener:
Not many would have predicted Wests to be sitting dead last after week one in the Newcastle Rugby League but the Cessnock Goannas put on a fairly impressive display to knock off the defending premiers. Former West coach Craig Miller's side rocketed from an 18-all half-time scoreline to a 34-18 victory, keeping the Rosellas scoreless in the second half.
Souths 2nd Half Brilliance Sees Off Kurri Bulldogs:
Despite being locked at 18-all during the half-time interval, the South Newcastle Lions would overcome Kurri Kurri at Townson Oval. Souths ran out 32-24 winners to get their 2015 season off to a perfect start.
Seagulls See Off Scorpions In Local Derby:
All three games on Saturday saw level half-time scorelines. 12-12 was the score between the Macquarie rivals at Cahill Oval. Seagulls' debutant Brad Murray kicked his side ahead with a penalty goal before James Vuka scored his second of the day to take the home side to an 18-12 lead. The Scorpions wouldn't give in but a field goal to Murray would be enough to see off the visitors.
Maitland Win Thriller At St. John's Oval:
Central were arguably the favourites going into Sunday's match-up and the Butcher Boys were leading against Maitland for the most of the 2nd half. Central could not close out the match, even though they came close a few times. A try in the 79th minute to Ryan Lacy gave Maitland winger Kade Hardy a chance to put his side ahead. The debutant provided the goods, despite a strong breeze and a very distracting home crowd.
