A-League Rising Star Of The Week
Alex Gersbach (Sydney FC)
Gersbach has been one of the finds of the season for the much-improved Sky Blues. Let's face it, the Sydneysiders didn't reach the heights expected with Del Piero on board but now with Graham Arnold in control they have excelled throughout the majority of the season and are in firm contention for the Premiers' Plate.
I was impressed watching a youthful Sydney FC side get past Sydney United 58 in the FFA Cup and Gersbach was one of the impressive young stars in that game. I have to admit though I didn't expect him to reach the heights that he has this season in such a short time.
Injury gave Gersbach a chance to make some A-League appearances but he's made the Sydney FC left-back position his own with some impressive displays over the course of the season.
Gersbach is not your everyday left-back. He's got an attacking mindset and has provided a couple of assists this season and countless threatening runs down the left side. He can whip in corners and on top of that he can defend very well for his age.
An Under 17 Australian international, Gersbach was tipped to make the step straight up into the Under 23's squad for their recent qualifiers but was only left out due to his age. It won't be too long before he's in the senior Socceroos squad. I know a lot of higher-ups can see the potential and most fans can too.
I was looking forward to seeing Gersbach play against the Jets a few weeks ago but he was suspended after a build-up of yellow cards. I will get to watch him in the last Jets' home game later this month and I'm excited to see him play in person. Let's face it, the Jets season is pretty much over so at least I can see some of the other teams' quality play.
Gersbach has slotted well into the Sydney FC side and has adapted to their style of play in hardly no time at all. Expect big things from Gersbach and expect more young Sydney players to be featured in my Rising Star of the Week articles.
