RESULTS: Mid-Week Games (A-League, FFA Cup & International)

Brisbane Losing Battle For Finals Spot:
(Brisbane 1-4 Western Sydney)

Last year's double winners are in severe danger of missing the A-League finals after a shock 4-1 loss to cellar-dwellers Western Sydney on Wednesday night. The struggling Wanderers blew Brisbane off the park and jumped off the bottom of the table in some style.

The situation for Brisbane is now critical. A loss to 6th-placed Melbourne City this weekend would effectively end their finals hopes.

Hunter Simba Out Of FFA Cup:
(Valentine 7-0 Hunter Simba)

I wasn't surprised by this result but take no credit away from Valentine who got the job done and moved into the next round. As I said in the preview, the Simba did a great job of making it this far and should hold their heads high. Unfortunately for them, Valentine are just too good a side to lose to a Zone League Two side.

Westy Into Next Round With Impressive Win:
(Thornton 1-3 West Wallsend)

After a tough season last year, West Wallsend are sitting equal top in the NewFM 1st Division and are now through to the next round of the FFA Cup with a 3-1 win over the Thornton Redbacks. It'd be a great story to see one of the oldest teams in Northern NSW make it to the FFA Cup Proper. That's a couple of wins away though.

Australia Shock World Champions Germany With Draw:
(Germany 2-2 Australia)

I know it was just a friendly and I know the Germans had a few starters out but to see a Tim Cahill-less Australia go within nine minutes of beating the reigning World Champions was incredible. I think Australian football is on the rise and a result like this will no doubt boost spirits ahead of what should be a routine win in Macedonia.
