FFA Cup Qualifiers (Northern NSW) RD3

A big weekend of FFA Cup action in Newcastle kicks off with the Weston Workers Bears taking on Adamstown Rosebuds at Hamilton's Darling St Oval. I got to watch the Bears in a pre-season trial against Broadmeadow a few weeks back and they didn't look as in sync as they did over the last season or two.

The fact is Weston were incredibly close to getting dumped out of this competition by the University in Round 2. They got through on penalties but need a much better effort to get past the Rosebuds this week.

I'm tipping Weston to get the win here but an Adamstown win would not surprise me at all.

My Tip: Weston Workers Win

Another all-NPL clash sees Hamilton Olympic host the Edgeworth Eagles. Olympic put five past the Newcastle Suns last round whilst Edgeworth bagged eleven against New Lambton so on that form you'd think Edgeworth would be the favourites here but at Darling St I can't go past Hamilton.

Hamilton's crowds are always loud and get behind their team in big numbers. Expect an entertaining contest but it's Hamilton for my money.

My Tip: Hamilton Olympic Win

The only all-Zone League clash of the round sees ZPL side Mayfield United host ZL1 team Jesmond F.C. First of all it's great to see two zone sides getting a chance to be the curtain-raiser for the NPL sides later in the day. It's much better than having this game played at Mayfield Park on a Wednesday night in front of 30 or so people.

Mayfield should get the job done here. I watched them play in the ZPL Grand Final last year and they looked to be an okay squad for that level. Jesmond did well beating Toronto-Awaba in the last round but I think their FFA Cup journey will come to an end on Sunday.

My Tip: Mayfield United Win

I'm heading over to watch the main game tomorrow so I'll probably see the back-end of this match-up between Charlestown City Blues and Maitland FC. The Magpies are back in the big time this season and will be hoping they can keep their FFA Cup run alive against a strong Charlestown side.

From all reports, Maitland seem to be building a strong squad of their own for this season and to be honest I think they can get the job done here. The experience and talent of Matt Thompson should help them get over the line.

My Tip: Maitland FC Win

I'll be making my way over to Magic Park tomorrow for what should be the match of the round in the FFA Cup. Broadmeadow know all too well what making the Round of 32 can bring. I was there the night they hosted Brisbane Strikers and the feeling was magical (no pun intended).

Both these sides have traded a few players back and forth in the off season but it's Lambton who have the bigger names. Adding former EPL player and long-standing Newcastle Jets striker Michael Bridges is surely going to boost the Jaffas' hopes of going back to back in the NPL competition.

Cup games are never predictable and this one is no doubt going to be a tight contest. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes to penalties to be honest. I'm tipping Magic but don't count out the Jaffas.

My Tip: Broadmeadow Magic Win
