2015 MLS Tips-Round 1

MLS Round 1:

Alright, first things first. This is the first time I'll be keeping a keen eye on Major League Soccer so I don't really know who to tip in Round 1. I've gone mostly for the favourites with a couple of draws chucked in as well. I know a bit about the MLS but will continue to learn as the new season begins.

Game 1: LA Galaxy v Chicago Fire (Sat 7 Mar 2pm AEDT)

First up, I've gone with LA Galaxy to defeat the visiting Chicago Fire at the StubHub Center in the opening game of the season. I can tell you from experience that Galaxy is the most-known MLS team in Australia as they visited my home town with David Beckham a few years back.

Adding Steven Gerrard at the end of the EPL season will no doubt boost the Galaxy's ranks as they look to win a sixth MLS title.

My Tip: LA Galaxy Win

Game 2: D.C United v Montreal Impact (Sun 8 Mar 7am AEDT)

I can't say too much about the second game. I actually own a DC United shirt but that's not really on topic. Anyway going on last season's form, United topped the Eastern Conference whilst Montreal finished last. So it wouldn't be a surprise to see DC United win this one.

My Tip: D.C United Win

Game 3: Philadelphia Union v Colorado Rapids (Sun 8 Mar 8am AEDT)

I'll be honest here, I don't know much about either of these sides. I'm going for Philadelphia purely based on the fact that it's a home game for them. Both these sides failed to make the playoffs last year and will be keen to start season 2015 in style. Philly's a sportsmad town though and they'll want nothing more than their soccer team to be successful.

My Tip: Philadelphia Union Win

Game 4: Vancouver Whitecaps v Toronto F.C (Sun 8 Mar 10am AEDT)

An all-Canadian derby kicks off the season for these sides as they look to improve on their 2014 seasons. Vancouver snuck into the playoff qualification round last season but went down to Dallas whilst Toronto will be hoping to move on from their testing times with Jermain Defoe. I was leaning towards a draw but wouldn't be surprised if the Whitecaps take all three points.

My Tip: Vancouver Whitecaps Win

Game 5: Houston Dynamo v Columbus Crew (Sun 8 Mar 12:30pm AEDT)

Columbus reached the MLS Cup playoffs last season but were disappointingly bundled out by New England. This time round the Crew have a new logo and a bit of an identity change. They make the long-trip south to Texas to face a Houston side that will be hoping to improve on a poor season in 2014. Expect both sides to be competitive and don't be surprised if it ends level.

My Tip: Draw

Game 6: F.C Dallas v San Jose Earthquakes (Sun 8 Mar 12:30pm AEDT)

San Jose had a shocker last season and I can see them struggling against a Dallas side that made the playoffs last season. Again I don't know too much about either side but Dallas are the obvious favourites.

My Tip: F.C Dallas Win

Game 7: Portland Timbers v Real Salt Lake (Sun 8 Mar 2:30pm AEDT)

Portland had a poor season by their standards last year and will be looking to start 2015 in style against Real Salt Lake. The team from Utah will bring their best to the North West but I think Portland will be winning what could very well be the match of the round.

My Tip: Portland Timbers Win

Game 8: Orlando City v New York City (Mon 9 Mar 8:00am AEDT)

A new era begins in the MLS begins on Monday morning when the two newcomers to the competition clash at the Citrus Bowl. A couple of years ago, no-one could predict seeing Kaka take on David Villa in a high-profile MLS clash but it will happen at 8am AEDT this Monday.

Orlando are the favourites but I think New York City will want to avoid a loss in their first ever game. As a Manchester City fan I'll be keeping a keen eye on the Sky Blues from Yankee Stadium and I can see these two sides playing out a draw in their first ever game. I'm looking forward to watching it as it's the only televised MLS game in Australia this week.

My Tip: Draw

Game 9: Sporting Kansas City v NY Red Bulls (Mon 9 Mar 10am AEDT)

Kansas City will be rocking for the first week clash with the New York Red Bulls. Sporting reached the MLS Cup final a couple of years ago and will be looking to start season 2015 in style. The Red Bulls pipped KC to the top four in the East last year but that was before they lost Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill.

The Kansas City community had a great year in 2014 and passionately got behind the Royals in their World Series appearance and will no doubt continue their following of Sporting KC in the MLS. An average attendance of 20,003 is nothing to frown upon for a soccer team in America and they'll surely be ready to put in a top effort for their fans.

My Tip: Sporting Kansas City Win

Game 10: Seattle Sounders v New England Revolution (Mon 9 Mar 12:30pm AEDT)

The final game of week 1 is arguably the best as last season's Supporter Shield winners Seattle host the MLS Cup runner-ups New England Revolution at CenturyLink Field. With a whopping average attendance of over 40,000, the Sounders are fast becoming one of the best teams in the US.

Seattle is getting used to success between the Sounders and the Seattle Seahawks. I think the Sounders will be achieving success again this season and I'm tipping them to start it off with a win over New England in week 1.

My Tip: Seattle Sounders Win
